Would you like to develop new skills in development control, providing blue and green infrastructure, and both maintaining and managing Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems?
West Yorkshire Flood Innovation Programme (WYFLIP) has developed a new blue-green infrastructure training programme in collaboration with water@leeds – one of the world’s largest interdisciplinary, university-based water research centres based at the University of Leeds.
Do you have a role in flood risk management?

Overview
These free training sessions, funded by the Yorkshire Flood and Resilience Coastal Committee, will upskill workers to provide more resilient infrastructure and deliver innovative flood and water management solutions, including the integration of green and blue infrastructure into developments. This approach has a positive impact on the environment and addresses the challenges of climate change. Ultimately, this will result in resilient infrastructure, greater support for businesses, landowners and economic benefits for the Yorkshire region and beyond.
Who is the blue-green infrastructure training aimed at?
We are looking for flood risk managers and relevant teams who will benefit from this training, which could be:-
- Highways and housing officers, development and planning teams, and design and regeneration officers in local authorities across Yorkshire.
- Teams who work for Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency with a relevant role
- Employees and volunteers with Rivers Trusts and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
Why is this training programme needed?
This training is part of the West Yorkshire Flood Greater Capacity Innovation Programme and aims to address an urgent need for better skills in flood risk management and climate resilience across Yorkshire. There is a critical gap in capacity and skills, which is a risk to the delivery of flood reduction and resilience benefits in the region. At the same time, there are new demands from the Flood and Water Management Act Schedule 3 – Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) requirements, climate adaptation plans and for green skills associated with climate resilience and readiness.
Delivery & format
- Online training sessions
- Introductory courses for new starters/less experienced teams, followed by in-depth, module-based training (SuDS and NFM)
- Recordings will be available so participants can revisit content
