An Introduction to NFM Monitoring

📍 Online, via Microsoft Teams

📅 Wednesday 18th March 2026 | 13:00 – 15:00

Overview

The Blue Green Infrastructure training programme is a West Yorkshire Flood Innovation Programme (FLIP) project that addresses an urgent need for stronger skills in flood risk management and climate resilience across Yorkshire.

There is a critical gap in capacity and skills, which is a risk to the delivery of flood reduction and resilience benefits in the region. The work is funded by the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (YRFCC) and will deliver a pilot training programme administered by iCasp and water@leeds at the University of Leeds. Event Description

This session will explore why it is important to monitor Natural Flood Management (NFM) interventions and schemes.

We will start with a recap of what NFM is and how it works, with a focus on inland NFM. Next, we will look at why we need to monitor NFM and explore how confident we are that different NFM interventions impact flood risk. We will then look at the monitoring requirements in the most recent Environment Agency and Defra £25 million NFM programme. Finally, we will look at some of the specific techniques we can use to monitor NFM.

Learning Outcomes

  • To be aware of knowledge gaps in our understanding of Natural Flood Management (NFM) interventions
  • To understand why we need to monitor Natural Flood Management (NFM) interventions to address these knowledge gaps
  • To be aware of the key principles for monitoring NFM
  • To have an understanding of various techniques that can be used to monitor NFM

Who can attend

This event is aimed at those working in local government teams with a responsibility for flood risk management or teams looking to upskill in the area. Teams within the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water can also access this training. Due to the nature of our funding, attendees must be working in the Yorkshire region.

Capacity will be reserved for employees or volunteers with local Rivers Trusts or Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Please contact [email protected] for further information on place availability.
